Ryan Fitzpatrick, WFT QB, goes to the reserve with an injury due to a hip problem

Agenda change frequently in the nation’s capital, and the Washington football team is already forced to pivot.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, 38, suffered a hip subluxation, meaning the ball of his femur has at least partially dislocated from the hip socket. He’s going into reserve for injuries, which would mean he won’t be available for at least three weeks.

He was injured in a shot from Los Angeles Chargers passing runner Uchenna Nwosu, who planted Fitzpatrick in the turf with his hip hitting hard. He completed three of his six 13-yard passes in his WFT debut before exiting. Fitzpatrick signed a one-year contract with the team in March.

Washington Football Team QB Ryan Fitzpatrick leaves the pitch after injuring his hip Sunday against the Chargers.

Taylor Heinicke, who played so well in the Washington playoff defeat to future Tampa Bay Buccaneers champions last season, replaced Fitzpatrick and scored 11 of his 15 pitches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the 20-16 defeat. Sunday against the Bolts. He will begin moving forward with Kyle Allen, who also played for Washington head coach Ron Rivera in Carolina, serving as a reserve.

The WFT also adds Kyle Shurmur, son of Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, to complete the depth chart in a move corresponding to Fitzpatrick’s period on IR. Not chosen by Vanderbilt in 2019, Kyle Shurmur spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals, but didn’t play a regular season game.

Rivera said Monday that the team currently has no plans to add any more quarterbacks to the roster.

Washington, which won NFC East in 2020, hosts the New York Giants on Thursday night, then travels to Buffalo and Atlanta over the next two weeks.

Rivera is likely to still face further questions about a potential reunion with free agent Cam Newton, who played under Rivera with the Panthers for nine seasons and won the league MVP title in 2015 when Carolina reached the Super Bowl. 50. He admitted that Newton “appeared on our radar” after his release from the New England Patriots, but decided to stay on course with Fitzpatrick.

However, a course correction may soon be needed.
