Firstly:
In Angband, each floor of the dungeon is 50' below the ground (so 50', 100', 150' and so on). This is a really handy way of giving a heads up about the depth, and thus difficulty, of the dungeon. It could also makes dwarfs and their underground abilities much more useful if you end up falling down a chute trap or something along those lines.
Secondly:
RANDOM TOWNSFOLK TABLE:
1. Squint-eyed rogue.
2. Filthy street urchin.
3. Aimless-looking merchant.
4. Village idiot.
5. Blubbering idiot.
6. Singing, happy drunk (1 in 6 chance of having some information on a dark secret, conspiracy or adventure-ripe gossip... for a drink, of course).
7. Mean-looking mercenary.
8. Pitiful-looking beggar.
9. Boil-covered wretch.
10. Mangy-looking leper.
11. Disgruntled farmer.
12. Scrawny cat.
13. Scruffy little dog (possibly speaks Common).
14. Haughty noble.
15. Excitable clergyman (1 in 6 chance of being a crouching priest, hidden cultist).
16. Rowdy dwarf.
17. Snooty-bastard elf.
18. Bumpkin halfbit.
19. Inquisitive magician.
20. Wicked witch.
For extra fun and variety, try rolling twice. Once for the description and then for the type (producing types such as inquisitive idiot, wicked clergyman, aimless-looking farmer, etc.)
